All About Nathan

On December 9, 2010 at 1:09 pm we welcomed you into the world.  You are not a big baby, but you're strong and you're healthy.  Already I can't believe how much I love you.  People have always told us that having a baby gives you a new sort of love that you can't even imagine, and they're right.

December 14, 2010 - 5 days old

We've had 2 nights at home now.  It's been pretty tough, I won't lie.  You are definitely a night owl.  Even when we were in the hospital the nurses would remark that you were an entirely different baby from morning to night.  During the day you don't do too much else but sleep.  Come nightfall you're wide awake and you want attention!  Your daddy and I managed by ourselves for the first 2 nights, today your grandma Evelyn arrived to help out.

December 22, 2010 - 13 days old - 5 pounds, 10 ounces

You gained 8 ounces since your doctor appointment last week!  I know that it doesn't sound like a lot, but it is.  You outdid what the doctors wanted you to do.

I think we're getting the hang of it now.  Grandma E left the other night and it was a big help having her here.  A couple of nights she would sit up with you and let me sleep.  You still like to stay up late which is hard on me.  I've never truly been a daytime napper so basically once I'm up for the day, I'm up.

I wonder how long you would sleep at night if I didn't wake you up?  The other night I was so exhausted that I didn't get up every 3 hours to feed you.  You woke up every 4 hours on your own.  But now you're eating a lot more during the day and I bet that you would sleep longer at night if I would let you.  But I won't.  You're still little and we want you to grow up to be big and strong.  So for now, we're waking you up to eat every 3 hours or so.

I want to brag to everyone about what a great baby you are.  You don't fuss except when we are changing your diaper and you are very good natured.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way.  It does take you a while to wake up though, and while you're trying to wake up, you make the funniest faces.  We really need to capture that on video.  Today you gave me a scowl, then a smile, then you make fishy lips, all without skipping a beat.

Tomorrow we're going to get your photos taken.  I doubt that they will be ready in time for us to use any of the photos in our baby announcements.  I'll have to take more photos of you at home until I get the perfect shot.

Then on Friday your other grandparents arrive for Christmas.  Your Aunt B and cousins will be in town for the holidays as well so you will meet them too.  I'm glad to show you off but also worried that you will catch a cold or something from them.  I know, I'm being overprotective.  I can't help it.  I'm your mom!

March 2, 2011 - 2 months, 3 weeks old

Oh my dear son, I had truly intended to write in here regularly for you.  But the truth is that you rarely allow me the time to brush my teeth, let alone update my blog!

You are doing great.  You're growing so fast that your clothes can't keep up with you.  Developmentally you are right where you should be, if not a little ahead of the curve.  The other day I had you on my chest and you kept belly crawling up and I had to keep moving you down!  Please don't start crawling for several more months!

You've learned to love your baths.  You hated getting your vaccinations.  You like your bouncy chair, but hate your swing.

We started a bedtime routine and you're a champ at going to bed, but early to bed means early to rise and I'm getting pretty tired!

March 8, 2011 - almost 3 months old!  10 pounds, 10 ounces

Today you had your 12 week Dr. appointment.  You have almost doubled your birth weight but not quite.  The nurse measured your height at 61 cm but I think that her measurement may be a little off.  Even so you are growing like a weed!

The last few nights you've slept like a champ!  Except that while you sleep I have to get up anyway to pump.  So the bad news is that I'm still a little sleep deprived, but the good news is that I'm storing up lots of breast milk for you.

You are doing your darndest to laugh.  Right now you can manage a very soft giggle.  I hope that soon you will be entertaining us with some big, baby, belly laughs!

Other moms make a huge deal when their babies roll over, but the truth is that you have been able to roll from your front to your back since you were a couple of weeks old!  I think that you just hate being on your belly that much!  I am keeping watch for when you do roll back to front though.

Next week you have your first plane ride as you and I travel so you can meet your grandpa and your great-grandparents.  Please be easy on me when we're in the airport and on the airplane!

August 20, 2011 - 36 weeks and 2 days old (8 months, 1 week)

It should be pretty obvious that you keep me pretty busy.  So busy in fact that I haven't updated this in 5 months!  You've hit so many major milestones that I don't know how to recap them all here.

However, in the past 3 weeks alone you have:

  • gotten your bottom 2 teeth
  • started crawling
  •  said your first word ("Gary")
  • and started to move to music
It's getting pretty obvious that you have a playful, devilish personality.  I can see your little mind working when you look at one of us with a goofy expression on your face.  And when you do do something to us (like rolling over mid diaper change) you have a wonderful laugh that makes it hard to say mad at you (well, not mad, more like annoyed).

Speaking of your wonderful laugh, here you are about a month ago:

As hard as parenting is, I wouldn't change my life for anything.
